In the past year, Surfers Against Sewage has enlisted the help of over 30,000 people to clean the beaches of the United Kingdom. From the old fashioned beach clean up, to supporting new technologies through plastic waste research, to developing a mobile app that monitors beach cleanliness up and down their coasts, the group of surfers has made a massive environmental impact around their homes. The impact is so wide, as a matter of fact, that they can now add “hosting royalty” to their resume.
Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, spent OceanPlastics Awareness Day with Surfers Against Sewage to learn what the activist group has been up to and lend their support. The event was put on to introduce and coordinate local Cornwall government and businesses to create what they are calling a “circular economy.” When the royal couple arrived at the beach they were greeted by Sally the Starfish and Larry the Lobster, two mascots created to represent the problems Cornwall faces against beach litter. David Smith, a member of Surfers Against Sewage, was one of the costumed people greeting Prince Charles. When asked what he talked about with the Prince of Wales he said, “The Prince said I was very sporting to being like this and he asked whether I would get an opportunity to go surfing later and said watch out for the great white sharks.”
It turns out even Prince Charles is shaken after the most famous shark encounter the world has ever seen.
