Outdoor brands aren’t happy. For the past twenty years, Salt Lake City has been the host city for Outdoor Retailer, the biannual preeminent trade show for the outdoor recreation industry. Salt Lake was chosen strategically – Utah boasts some of the most impressive public lands in the country. But given the politics of the state, particularly Utah Governor Gary Herbert who has acted in direct opposition to the values to which many outdoor brands ascribe, many companies are speaking out.
On Tuesday, the Salt Lake Tribune published a scathing op-ed written by Black Diamond founder and CEO, Peter Metcalf, outlining the inconsistencies between the values of the show and those of the state’s political leaders.
