The Inertia

Riding a chair is the furthest thing from our minds this time of year. We’re in the dead of summer and that means folks across North America are planning family vacations, enjoying beach days, going on surf trips, and definitely not running around in their winter gear. That’s also exactly why a random July snowfall grabs our attention whenever it happens.

For example, the first day of summer at Palisades Tahoe almost looked like the first day of winter for a brief moment. A storm caught people by surprise and dropped enough snow that a massive race was shut down with a little less than 400 trail runners needing to be evacuated mid-trail run.

Another storm in Canada just gave us some images of snow on the ground in the summer months, this time at Alberta’s Banff Sunshine Village. The lifts aren’t running, of course, but the cams at the top of the mountain are, and two storms in the past week showed some dusting at the top of Goat’s Eye Express. The resort just announced a few weeks ago that it’s open until late September for summer operations, which definitely doesn’t include skiing and snowboarding. That didn’t stop the offseason storm though.

Images from the morning of Thursday, July 10, showed some decent ground coverage but temps obviously aren’t low enough for any of that snow to stick around. The morning of July 15 saw more dusting at Goat’s Eye. This time it was a bit lighter and the snow was all reportedly melted within a few hours, but still, seeing snow on the ground in July is always a fun little poke for powder hounds. We’re several months away from opening day but it won’t be long before some of us are getting antsy (and hopeful) for temps to cool, snow-making machines to get going, and a big early-season storm that magically gets those lifts running early.

One can hope, right?
