The Inertia

Winter is over, depending on where you live. Sure, a few hills here and there are still getting snow, but for the most part, this past (dismal) winter is in the rearview. But back in the ’80s, there was something that helped you ski without snow, and you didn’t need to be Candide Thovex: Rollerskis.

The 1980s were a wonderful time. I’m an elder millennial, so the time before the internet and cell phones are the times that shaped me. It was a time to drink water from hoses. A time to ride BMX bikes off dirt jumps into the creek. A time to come home when the street lights came on. A time where our parents didn’t know where we were for most of the day. God, it was great.

It was also great because the ’80s gave us some of the most iconic toys ever. G.I. Joe. Cabbage Patch Kids. Slinkies, View-Masters, Skip-Its. Rubik’s Cubes. The freaking original Nintendo. What a time to be a kid! The roller ski didn’t ever really catch on (although you can still purchase a new and improved set), but despite that, they were quintessentially ’80s. And hell, you never know… they might catch on again. Trends are cyclical, right?
