The Inertia

The Utah Department of Transportation has its hands full, there’s no doubt. The entity clears the road for two canyons (Little and Big Cottonwood) that are home to some of the largest resorts in the world. Both canyons are wonders of the Wasatch, with fantastic skiing terrain and powder that can absolutely change your life. The steep terrain that dumps into those canyons also creates avalanches that have taken the lives of countless people.

That’s why UDOT constantly does avalanche mitigation work in both canyons. And sometimes, we get to see video of it. Like the Facebook post above. UDOT posted this mashup of some of the work they do in this terrain. The first clip shows a massive slide that covered the road and created a ton of work for the public department. But it shows exactly what it takes to keep those roads open for skiers and snowboarders. It definitely ain’t no walk in the park.
