The Inertia

When you’re walking one the beach and find a plastic bottle, a wrapper, or a bag washed ashore you rarely think of where it came from. How far did it travel? Where did its journey across the ocean begin? How many animals did it dodge or nearly kill along the way? All you really know in the moment is this plastic bottle isn’t supposed to be here.

That story, however, is being told through art now. It’s a traveling art and science exhibition (currently at USC’s Fisher Museum of Art) called Gyre: The Plastic Ocean, exploring our modern culture of consumption and its consequences on the natural world. Humans are responsible for a massive, unfathomable amount of trash that ends up in our oceans. And this exhibit compiles the works of 25 different artists who use the ironic beauty of that trash to make aesthetically pleasing works to showcase the devastating impact it all has on our world.

For more information or to visit Gyre: The Plastic Ocean at the USC Fisher Museum of Art in Los Angeles, visit their website. The exhibition will be on display through November 2, 2015.
