The Inertia

There comes a point in every surfer’s life when they realize that they’ve become a surfer. It’s an official thing, and it usually comes with at least one of the reasons below.

1. No matter how much you try, there is always sand in your bed… a permanent reminder of your love affair with surfing.

2. Your car has extra boards, wetsuits, fins, bathing suits, towels and other miscellaneous surf gear in it at all times… just in case you get a free window of time and can squeeze in a quick sesh.

3. You find yourself texting old and new surf friends at all hours of the day and night to make plans for the next morning’s surf.

4.  When you go on a non-surf trip, you always bring a bar of wax with you, just to keep the reminder of surfing close to your heart… and your nose.

5. The minute you meet someone in a non-surf setting –like at work or a party – and you find out they surf, you begin to swap surf stories; tales of surf survival or travel. They quickly become your new surf buddy and best friend.

6. You finally let go and start peeing in your wetsuit.

7. After two or three days out of the water, your significant other, friends or business partners make you go surfing so they don’t have to suffer through your impossible mood. And if you miss a week, they all know to stay away!

8. You find yourself getting naked pretty much anywhere, at any time: in any parking lot, on the side of any street, on the sidewalk. You have to change into your wetsuit somewhere!

9. Your eating, sleeping and working routines are planned around the tides, the swell and the wind.

10. You stop wearing your wetsuit with a bathing suit underneath.

11. At random times of day, you bend over and water comes pouring out of your nose.
