Sickos on a 20-foot longboard

The Inertia

Longboarding is really fun. In my humble opinion, at least, being decent on a longboard is important. It lets you surf more. It makes you a little more in tune with the wave, because a longboard reacts slower. But a longboard can be too long, and the Sickos, a loose posse of YouTube influencers based out of Hood River, Oregon, found that out first hand when they had a 20-foot log made. It’s not the first time they’ve experimented with adding a bit of length to something, either. They attempted the world’s tallest foil as well as the world’s longest snowboard.

The crew was in Bali, a place full of great longboarding waves. If you’ve hung around Canggu enough, you know that. If you’ve hung around Canggu enough, you also know that Canggu, while located in Bali, does not feel like Bali. But still, longboards are everywhere there, strapped to the sides of scooters ridden by “digital nomads” with flat whites on their breath and exhaust burns on their calves.

There are plenty of surfboard shops around Bali, but it’s unlikely that any of them had ever had a request to make a 20-foot surfboard. But where there’s a will there’s a way, so after carving a massive hunk of foam into a surfboard-like shape, they put a few fin boxes in (five, so you have options in case you want to ride your 20-foot board as a quad), glassed it, and sent it on its way.

The board took the whole crew to ride — and “ride” is a term used loosely here — but hey, the shortboard revolution didn’t happen because people were scared of trying things. Perhaps this is just the beginning of the longboard revolution. Probably not, but perhaps.
