The Inertia

Powerful. Nasty. Rough. When the WSL’s 2018 Nazaré Challenge was given green light, I decided to make my way up to Praia do Norte to watch some courageous big wave surfers from all around the world take on this monster.

I arrived on Saturday at 11 am and the contest was already on hold, with strong winds making the conditions unruly. Pictures can’t do the feeling and the power of the wave justice. This is a place that reminds us how powerful, how dangerous, and how fascinating nature can be.

On Sunday morning, the contest was back on with the BWT’s competitors surfing the dangerous, insane waves of Nazaré until 21-year-old Lucas “Chumbo” Chianca hoisted the trophy at the end of the day.
