The Inertia

Mark Occhilupo surfs like he’s making a real effort to snap his surfboard. That low, wide stance paired with his stocky frame and powerful legs certainly can’t be easy on the foam, but he’s got a surfboard that is made exactly for his style of surfing. In the video above, Occy takes it through its paces at D-Bah.

Occy knows the wave well, and his surfing is a bit of a throwback to when speed, power, and flow took precedence over aerials. He’s an example of a classic power surfer, of which there are few these days. Sure, there are a couple who have it in their bag — Conner Coffin comes immediately to mind — but for the most part, the days of power surfing have been replaced by a mix of slightly less powerful surfing with an emphasis on aerials. It’s not a bad thing; everything evolves with time.

But Occy’s surfing to this day has remained the same. He might be a little older and a little more sore, but that strength mixed with a preternatural ability to flow with the wave while still attacking it is unrivaled.

That skill is on full display in the short video above. He’s riding a stock board, albeit a stock board that was basically made for him, and doesn’t it make you want to smash a lip as hard as you possibly can?
