The Inertia

The final days of December provided an historic experience (if not downright exhilarating) for surfers and bodyboarders all along the southern coast of California. With this year’s El Niño swell, the waves surged with unprecedented intensity, leaving an indelible mark on the coastal landscape. Unfortunately, the powerful swell took a toll on some iconic landmarks. Piers, including Ocean Beach, succumbed to the force of the waves, reminding us of nature’s raw power.

Despite the challenges, people who enjoy riding waves reveled in the joy of a monumental swell event (that also happened to be clean), turning the coastline into a playground for experienced watermen and women. The surf community united in appreciation for the unique opportunity presented by this exceptional El Niño swell, creating memories until….the next swell. It did, however, serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between the beauty and force of the ocean. I was lucky enough to be in the water filming. This is six minutes of footage I put together from the Holiday swell to remember.
