The Inertia

We know this: a number of shark encounters have been documented this year on Oahu. And it seems like there are more sightings than usual. But why? Last week, a Hawaii state championship surfing event had to be cancelled due to a shark in the lineup. In early April, 58-year-old surfer Mike Morita was attacked at Kewalo Basin. Other sharks have been spotted in and around lineups throughout the islands, recently.

All these sightings have experts scratching their collective noggins. Hawaii’s KHON 2 spoke to experts in Hawaii about the string of recent encounters, trying to find answers. The big takeaway? There might not be any solid answers. It’s the ocean. Sharks live there. We surf. We’re just going to have to continue to deal with it.
