Adam Francis Kennedy D’Esposito, the surfer who went missing in Mexico in mid-September, has been found dead. D’Esposito’s sister Briana confirmed the tragic news via Facebook. “It is with great sadness and the deepest sorrow that we have confirmed the death of my brother, Adam Francis Kennedy D’Esposito also known as “Biff,” she wrote.

D’Esposito, a 39-year-old surfer, was well known in lineups around the world. Before his death, he was last seen in Baja Malibu, a place he frequented. Kelly Slater posted a plea for help in finding him on Instagram. “A familiar face in our surf world has been missing for nearly two weeks, last seen in Baja Malibu, Mexico on 8/9 driving a silver Volvo station wagon,” he wrote. “It really hits home when someone you know goes missing… You may have seen ‘Biff’ surfing in Tahiti or San Diego over the years. He’s been a familiar face in many lineups.”

According to FOX5, D’Esposito officials recovered his body on September 9th, the day after he was last seen. He was taken to a morgue in Rosarito, where he remained until he was identified. The cause of death has been determined as drowning.

“Biff,” as he was known to many, was no stranger to heavy waves. In 2013, he was nominated for the Wipeout of the Year Award.

“The details of my brother’s death are still being sorted out, we kindly ask for your respect during this confusing time. Our hearts are heavy as we come to terms with the fact that he is no longer with us,” Briana’s Facebook post read. “He was a very charismatic person with a big heart, passionate personality and a deep love for surfing. He had a huge heart for his young daughter and enjoyed spending so much time with her in his last few months. The impact that he had on so many was incredibly evident to my family through your support, love and efforts to help us during a highly stressful and worrisome time. We thank all of you from the bottom of hearts. We will notify everyone about memorial services and paddle outs to honor my brother’s life as we confirm the dates and details.”

Our sincerest condolences go out to anyone affected by this tragedy.
