Here’s a spoiler alert: Albee Layer closes his new project LESS THAN EASY with a powerful declaration. It’s one that makes you think.

“I’m anything but satisfied with the surfing I’ve done here in my lifetime,” he says. “I’m not even close to being done with what I want to do.”

The 18-minute short is a journey through Maui, surfing some hidden gems, flying over the island, and a run of swell at Jaws Layer calls the”best five-day run of Jaws waves I’ve ever seen in my lifetime ending with the biggest swell I have seen so far in my life.”  For an athlete who’s been pushing the envelope in aerial surfing and in big waves his entire career, it’s exciting to hear he’s far from done. Layer’s always been an outlier. He’s always been outspoken. And LESS THAN EASY gives the sense that the hunger hasn’t died down one bit. Even in his 30s.

“Learning how to fly on Maui is a lot like learning how to surf on the North Shore of Maui,” he says. “You get really good at correcting for the wind. You’re learning to co-exist with conditions that are less than easy for most activities.”

It’s not ideal, he admits. But there’s a silver lining to it all.

‘We’ve learned to not just exist in those conditions, but to thrive in them.”
