Albee Layer in front of a slab wave on Maui

The Inertia

There are some waves that just don’t look surfable. “Surfable” is a relative term, though, and Albee Layer has a different way of looking at things. Take, for example, the Maui slab you see in this video from Tucker Wooding.

This wave is not a wave that most surfers would look at and think, “Yeah, that looks fun.” But Albee? Albee likes waves that make his heart beat faster. He likes waves that don’t like him. He likes waves that he has to fight with. For a while, it was just Albee, a surfboard, and a death slab. But just like many other waves, once someone paddles out, so do the others. In this case, the others were Steve Roberson, Ramon Rode, and Kingston Panebianco, all of whom share a similar love for sketchy slabs.
