The Inertia

Surf trips can be difficult sometimes. Months and months of planning and sleepless nights filled with excitement are often marred by a terrible forecast. There’s almost nothing worse than waiting for a much needed surf trip, only to watch the waves deteriorate as you’re packing your bags. But there is one place where that’s not really a worry: Aura Surf Resort in Northern Sumatra. It’s one of the only resorts to have an amazing wave almost permanently installed on its doorstep.

The Peak, as it is known, sits right in front of the resort. An A-frame peak which is the most consistent wave on the island, it works year ’round, and is just one of many waves in the area – all of which Aura’s talented surf guides can get you to. Their guides have an extraordinary knowledge of waves in the area, and with a speedboat, zodiac, scooters, cars, and a 9-seater van, they’ll get you where it’s firing.

Surf trips can really only be ruined by two things: bad waves or a bad time. Aura Surf Resort has got you covered on both fronts – with bungalows that overlook The Peak, you’re able to check the conditions from your bed, and not by looking online. And when you’re in a need of a break, the resort has everything from a bar to a tree house, and every thing in between. Mini golf, a full games room, and arguably the best food on the island. Aura is run by surfers, which means they know exactly what surfers need: good waves, good food, and good times. They’ve got all that in spades.

The photos above are some of Aura’s October highlights, but don’t let that fool you into thinking this place only goes off for a few months a year. The conditions shown here are pretty much the norm all year around, thanks to a hidden trench that ramps up swell events to world-class levels and the longest fetch in the entire Sumatran archipelago. Want proof? Check out September’s highlights and August’s highlights. A few WaterWays Surf Adventure passengers scored some of the best waves of their lives, and you could too.
