Ben Gravy is the ultimate frother. He’s made “novelty waves” a thing we all talk about. Perhaps even more important, he’s made them something a lot of us go out and look for. And the reality is, saying you surfed a “novelty wave” at the end of the day is kind of just a nice way of saying there were no “real” waves around and you were so anxious to get in the water that you sought out anything with a breaking face. But his froth is our froth. It’s that infectious.
With that in mind, you can imagine a guy who finds any reason to get wet 365 days a year absolutely loses his mind when the surf is pumping. And sure enough, it’s almost heartbreaking yet somehow completely relatable to see what he endures here once he’s been blessed with epic conditions and picture-perfect surf. By Gravy’s count, after a morning of chatting with the boys on the beach, getting everybody’s claims, dissecting the conditions, and waiting for the right opportunity to get his share, he ends up with…two waves. And in typical Gravy fashion, the man happily takes his two as fuel to keep chasing more.
