The Inertia

A few days ago, I took a longboard and my girlfriend’s 8-foot foamie out for a Sunday afternoon at the beach. The waves were shit–windy and messy, and not very big. First, I paddled out on the log, caught a few, and didn’t have a great time. Longboards suck if it’s bumpy. THEN, I took the foamie out for a spin. I haven’t really ridden one for a few years… and my oh my, was it ever fun.

There’s something about foam that forces you to not care as much. You can’t do much except surf–there’s not a lot of point in doing angry off the lips or getting in as many turns as you can… it’s just fun. Foamies force fun.

Blair Conklin, of course, is a wizard on a surfboard. Put him on an Odysea Stump and throw him into a few Mexican tubes that aren’t even really there, and you’ve got yourself a show.
