Bomb cyclone Hernando creates huge waves in New Jersey

Driving wind. Heavy snowfall. And really, really good waves. For the dream! Photo: YouTube//Instagram

The Inertia

Winter Storm Hernando was a powerful force of nature. The Northeast region was absolutely hammered by high winds and driving snow, causing power outages, flight cancellations, and general mayhem. But it also brought waves, and where you find waves, you often find Ben Gravy.

The bomb cyclone is finally calming a bit, but the aftermath is apparent. Heavy snow and powerful winds are still affecting some areas, but the area’s residents are finally in the tail end of it. Massachusetts was the hardest hit — some 282,000 people are without power — but places like New Jersey, Delaware, Rhode Island, New York, and Maryland also saw thousands of people in the dark.

All that wind, however, whipped up a swell that measured around 19 feet at 11 seconds, and despite the incredibly inclement weather, Ben Gravy was out there for the dream.

“We expected snow and we expected waves, but we had no way of knowing that we were going to wake up to a 19-foot at 11-second buoy reading and these types of extreme bomb cyclone conditions,” Gravy wrote. “Happy to make it through this one safe and sound with a few solid waves under our belts as the icing on the very frozen cake.”
