The Inertia

Burleigh Point to Snapper Rocks is an incredible stretch of sand. The Gold Coast City Council agrees–as of September 11th, they made an 11-1 decision to nominate it as a World Surfing Reserve.

Back in 2012, the Governor of Queensland declared the area a National Surfing Reserve. Now, with the endorsement of the Queensland Premier, National Surfing Reserves, Save the Waves Coalition, Surfrider Foundation, Surf Lifesaving Queensland, along with a variety of other organizations and nearly every surfer in the world, some of the world’s best surf spots will be protected.

Brad Farmer, the man who came up with the whole idea of creating surfing reserves, is clearly in favor. “Today’s decision comes with strings attached according to inside reports,” he said, “but the symbolic principles to recognize the famed surf breaks of the Gold Coast is worth popping the corks for.”

Although the proposal was supported by nearly everyone, there were a bumps in the road. Initially, the City of Gold Coast wasn’t too keen on the idea as the nomination makes it all but impossible to develop the coastline in the future.

In the end, though, good won out, and more of nature’s beauty and surfer’s heaven will be protected from the ever-encroaching hand of progress.
