Big wave videographer Tim Bonython has been spending quite a bit of time at Cape Solander in recent weeks. Putting in the work is a necessity — as it is in surfing — if you want to score. And on Good Friday, Bonython scored.
It’s a wild place that’s known by a few names. “Ours” was the first moniker, then “Cape Fear.” It is one of the heaviest barrels in Sydney (and Australia as a whole), but for those who like to feel their heart beating, it’s an absolute paradise. And over Easter weekend, it was about as good as it gets.
“I have waited for years to film Sydney’s Cape Solander big, like real BIG,” Bonython wrote. “It could not have happened on a better day.”
The film you see here is part one of two exceptional days, the second of which took place on the seventh day of Eastertide.
“Waves measured six to 10 feet with some 15-foot BOMBS!” Bonython continued. “Featuring the Mad Hueys, Max McGuigan, Oscar Berry, Jimmi Hill, the Mullet Lord, Kipp Caddy, and others, this swell was so raw it was almost unsurfable. It’s unbelievable to have such a great wave here in Sydney, so close to home.”
Bonython calls it one of the heaviest, most perfect barrels Sydney has to offer, and it’s not for the faint hearted.
