There are a lot of surfers living in and around Los Angeles. It’s a nice ocean off that glittering stretch of coastline, but it’s not just us that use it. We share it with plenty of other creatures, and for surfers, the most notable of them is the great white shark. Carlos Gauna has spent many hours searching for great white sharks off the coast of L.A., and in his most recent YouTube installment, he explains how he goes about finding them.
“It’s January in Los Angeles and there are great white sharks on some of its busiest beaches,” Gauna wrote. “In this video, I sit down with Dr. Phil Sternes in search of great white sharks along one of Los Angeles’ busiest beaches. This is a quick look at my equipment, and the process of searching for sharks.”
Although Gauna is very experienced with sharks, he’s quick to admit that he’s not a trained scientist. “I’m NOT a marine biologist,” he explains. “As with all YouTube content, I encourage independent verification of facts via official scientific and trustworthy sources. I will strive to post citations for any information I discuss here whenever possible. My goal is to use photography and drones to bring awareness to wildlife and the nature around us.”
Trained scientist or not, though, Gauna’s methods of finding and recording great white sharks in their natural habitat have proven to be immensely effective.
“His footage has fascinated viewers from across the globe, challenged misconceptions of white sharks, and even altered Carlos’ own perspective of the species,” wrote Save Our Seas.
