Clay Marzo doing a weird turn on a slab

Look closely at Clay’s surfboard here. Who else is pulling this off? Photo: YouTube//Screenshot

The Inertia

Clay Marzo is a once-in-a-generation surfer. Hell, he might be even rarer. He can do things on a surfboard that no one else can, and he can do those things with frightening regularity. But Clay Marzo isn’t doing those things for anyone but himself. He’d be doing them whether anyone was watching or not. And frankly, sometimes it feels as though we’d prefer that we weren’t. That only adds to the mystique, though. Although we do get to see him surfing semi-frequently, it’s uncommon to see him surfing on a twin fin. But guess what? Clay rips on a twin, too. I’m not surprised. Are you?

The short edit you see here was filmed by his partner and filmer, the super-talented Leilani Zerkle. I spent a wonderful week in Portugal with them a few years back, and it was clear that they are not only a powerhouse of a couple, but a powerhouse of a production team, as well. Clay is far more comfortable around her than he is with most people, and that comfort shows. His surfing would be the same, of course, but if a tree falls in the forest, does anyone hear it?

Clay’s riding two boards, both made by Album Surfboards: a 5’11” Warptwin and a VBSM of the same size. He’s on a fun-looking little slab of a wave that the vast majority of people wouldn’t be able to do much of anything on, but Clay? Clay can do anything he wants on it.
