Coxos is an absolutely incredible wave. It’s a little heavier than it looks, but the juice is certainly worth the squeeze. That’s why, when it’s on, Ericeira surfers flock to the place.
It’s earned its reputation as a wave that every surfer wants to surf at least once. When the stars align, it’s a nearly-perfect right hand point break. The reef it breaks over slopes gradually until the middle of the bay, and the wave comes pounding across the ocean from deep water, holding all of its power in it until it hits that slab of rock and trips over itself.
The reef consists of a handful of rocky shelves, leading to a wave with multiple sections. Barrels are often on offer, and Coxos ain’t scared of a big swell. It can handle a big one — not just handle, in fact, but works even better — and low to mid-tide is when you want to hit it.
Nic von Rupp is a guy who loves Coxos, so when one last swell (probably) made its way to Baia dos Dois Irmaos, he made sure he was there to squeeze every last drop out of it.
