The Inertia

Years ago, Craig Anderson surfed a wave that went down in history. You know it, almost certainly. He was on 5’4″ Hypto Krypto at 10-12 foot Kanduis, and his knock kneed, casual approach was internet-breaking. He’s got a long relationship with Hayden Cox, the man behind Haydenshapes and the Hypto Krypto, and recently Ando ended up at Alaia Mentawai with a quiver full of Haydenshapes.

When most people go on a surf trip, they bring a bag full of boards. Despite the hassle of traveling with surfboards, there’s nothing worse than showing up with the wrong board for the conditions on offer. When you get to Craig Anderson’s level, you’re a little more sensitive to the conditions.

I, for example, generally have a standard shortboard for good waves, a mid-length for okay days, and a longboard for small days. I ride the mid-length and the longboard a lot more than the shortboard — even on good days — but you get the idea. Three vastly different surfboards for three very distinct conditions. Anderson’s quiver is a little more suited for the varying degrees of good waves.

In the video you see here, shot on location at Alaia Mentawai, Anderson runs through the boards he packed for the trip. There’s a 5’9″ Darkside, 5’6” Germ, a 5’6” Holy Hypto, a 6’6” Mini Gun, and of course, a 5’4” Hypto Krypto.
