The Inertia

In the bodyboarding world, there are a few legends. Dave Hubbard is one of them. He recently sat down to talk about his favorite things to do on a wave, and the things he talks about don’t only apply to surfers of the lying down persuasion — they apply to anyone who rides waves.

There is a bit of a divide between surfers and bodyboarders, but it’s a dumb one. Too many surfers think of bodyboarders as kids who flop around in the whitewash on what look like a single-use pieces of foam their parents bought for them at the ABC Store along with a bottle of Coppertone and a fake lei. But bodyboarders are door breakers. Bodyboarders open up spots to surfers. Bodyboarders at the highest level are insane.

Dave, as you likely know, is the brother of Jeff Hubbard. They launched their bodyboard brand, Hubboards, back in 2013, and they did it on the back of careers that pushed the limits. They’ve got 15 world titles between them and both are widely regarded by surfers and bodyboarders alike as some of the best to ever do it.

The maneuvers Hubbard loves the most aren’t loved because they’re hard. Instead he loves them because they inspire creativity, control, and progression.

“From drop knee lip floaters to loopy air reverses, slow forward spins, and rare counter-rotational maneuvers, Dave shares what draws him to each move, how they work, and why experimenting outside the norm is such an important part of bodyboarding progression,” reads the YouTube description. “This isn’t a ‘how-to,’ it’s an insight into how one of the most influential riders in the sport thinks about movement, timing, and style in the water.”
