The Inertia

Dior has been on a bit of a surfing kick, lately. In May, the fashion house announced a collaboration with Vissla to produce a high-fashion wetsuit with a hefty price tag of $3,300. Now, you can have an equally luxe board to wear that thing on, via Dior’s new collaboration with French surf brand Notox.

The board is part of a Beach Capsule created by Kim Jones for the Dior Fall 2023 line. The shaper, Notox, is a French surf brand headquartered in the Basque Country that focuses on creating eco-friendly surfboards. As such, the Dior board is “made from responsible local resources like organic materials and a low-solvent resin that demonstrates Dior and Notox’s shared commitment to the environment and oceans,” as per the description on the Dior webstore. The board bears an unforgiving $10,500 price tag, appropriate for the legendary fashion house’s pedigree.

The chunky, diamond-tailed twinnie has a forgiving outline, well suited for the performance needs of the megayacht set, and actually bears somewhat of a resemblance to …Lost’s Party Crasher model. It also appears to only come in one size: 6’9” x 20.5″ x 3″. This makes sense, because it’s unlikely this thing will see all that much water time, unless it’s for some sort of YouTube stunt.

However, unlike decorative pieces, such as the Hayden Cox-designed acrylic board, this is an actual working surfboard. The shape and dimensions are also weirdly reasonable for such an impractical object. I appreciate that it’s a shape that actually seems like it’s meant to be ridden, rather than some vanity HPSB outline, designed to make you feel like you’re gonna huck airs at Lowers.

Obviously, it’s a statement piece more than serious sports equipment. On the other hand, it’s not really pretending to be anything else. It’s expensive and it’s goofy and I’m here for it.
