This is setting up as one of the most historic weeks in the history of big wave surfing. A week ago Mavericks had one of its most epic days ever, with big wave chargers flocking to Northern California from every corner of the globe. Some of them came thinking they’d be putting on a contest jersey once Titans of Mavericks got the green light, only to find that Super Bowl 50 was crashing that party (literally). With safety and emergency resources committed to the big game, Titans was put on hold thanks to a “blackout” period put on by agencies that would normally operate through the big wave event.
In the grand scheme of things that proved to be a very minor and very brief setback, with Titans getting the nod for February 12th. Lucky for us that means days like the one in this film (February 4th) didn’t pass in vain. Surfers made the most of the epic day(s) at Mavs, providing some great highlights to add to a XXL-filled winter. But pumping Mavericks by drone? That’s not something we see every day. Sure, the aerial perspective takes away from the massive size but it doesn’t diminish her beauty. Who’d have thought Mavs’ prettiest, most photogenic angle was from above?

Whoa! Told you it was a good view.
