The Inertia

People who fish for a living see the darnedest things. And that’s to be expected. They spend so much time on the ocean that eventually, something weird is going to happen right before their eyes. Like this mammoth grouper, that looks like it’s from the Stone Age, come from deep to devour a reef shark whole in one swallow. The video was captured on a charter boat owned by Everglades Fishing Company out of Everglades City, Florida. Apparently, clients on the boat captured the video of the dinosaur-sized fish as it devoured a free meal that was already on someone’s line. Only problem is this meal came with a hook. The company’s founder, Jim Wheeler, told media that the grouper eventually spit the shark out when it couldn’t tear the reel out of the client’s hands. Good call. Live to eat large, living things in one bite another day.

Learn how to minimize chances of an adverse shark encounter as well as critical information about shark behavior, shark personalities, shark language, what to do in the unlikely event a shark bites you, and more in 20-plus video lessons in Ocean Ramsey’s Guide to Sharks and Safety.
