Summertime is the best time. The weather gets better, the water gets warmer, and sometimes, if you’re really lucky, the waves get great. If you’re planning on spending an entire day at the beach, here are a few things that will make your life even better than it already is.
1. A Summer Grovel Shred Stick
When it’s small and crowded, every surfer needs a secret weapon. For me that secret weapon is a wider, thicker quad shaped by Edit Industries called the “Fishstick.” Normal fish surfboards are wide and fast, but don’t allow for quick turns in the pocket or, well pretty much shredding the gnar. Out of the frustration of not being able to totally shred like a boss, the Fishstick was born. The nose is a little wider and rounder, but not too round, allowing the board to get into waves easy and hug the face better for tighter situations. This shape has more tail rocker, a single to double concave with V between the fins allowing you to get speed down the line. The quad set up is loose and skatey making this board an all-around summer shred stick.
2.Wallet Style Phone Case
When I go to the beach, I’m usually not wearing a lot of clothes with pockets, so in order to keep all my stuff together I recommend using a wallet style phone case. My favorite so far is the Stowaway model from Incipio. At first I wasn’t sure if my cards would be secure, but after months of testing, the case has secured my credit cards and ID. The case even survived a dropping on the ground after I got out of the car. This case is a great way to minimize and organize your essentials for the perfect beach day.
3.Pump-up the Jams with a Portable Bluetooth Speaker
There are so many to choose from out there, but I highly recommend the durable and waterproof BRV-1. This little speaker fits easily in your backpack and is great for taking to the beach, pool or camping. The BRV-1 fits in the palm of your hand, is IPX7 certified waterproof, and lasts for 12 hours. The speaker is Bluetooth enabled so you can connect and stream music from your phone.
4.Surf Grass Matt or FCS Changing Mat/Wet Bag
I’ve heard people say they don’t like going to the beach because they don’t like sand. I mean, what?! If you love the beach, but aren’t a big fan of sand, taking a grass mat to the beach will help out a lot with this dilemma. The grass mat is the best way to get the sand off your feet and change out of wet clothing without attracting more sand. You could buy the official surf mat, or you could go to Home Depot and get a square cut out for you.
5. Rip Curl GPS Watch
At first you might scoff at this nifty invention, but once you get familiar with the watch and the app, you’ll find out this is a fun way to keep track of your surf sessions. Say you have a personal goal of catching x amount of waves for the year or logging x amount of time in the water, the GPS watch is a great way to keep track of all of that. Another fun feature is that you can follow your friends and the top Rip Curl pros to compare and compare your sessions.
