The Inertia

First came the devastating fires earlier this winter. Then this week, the rains came. And with no vegetation left to stop the runoff, the flooding has been fairly catastrophic over the last few days, especially in places like Montecito, near Santa Barbara, California. Multiple news outlets are confirming that at least 15 people are dead in the area as a result of the mudslides and flooding.

In one fantastic show of humanity, a Coast Guard Jayhawk helicopter from San Diego lifted a family of five in Montecito to safety. The brood included the mother, father a newborn, seven-year-old son, three-year-old daughter and a pair of dogs.

The flooding has been substantial. And soul crushing, as you can see from the aerial footage, below.
