The Inertia

The Molokai2Oahu is one of the toughest races on the planet. Every summer, expert water people use prone paddleboards or SUPs (and now foil boards ) to cross the Ka’iwi Channel (Channel of Bones), 32 miles between the islands of Oahu and Molokai. The waters are treacherous with side currents coming from everywhere. If conditions are right though, it’s like surfing ocean open bumps sent from the surfing gods – a freight train all the way to Hawaii Kai. But more often than not, it’s a suffer fest.

Jamie Mitchell made his name here. Kai Lenny was the first to foil it. This weekend the Championships are on again. The M2O recently released this video piece of former CT surfers Joel Parkinson and Rob Machado (and our own Sam George) talking about the prestige of crossing one of the most difficult pieces of water in the Pacific.

The Molokai2Oahu kicks off Sunday morning. Check the race website for updates.
