For nearly two decades, Gabriel Medina has been a Rip Curl guy. But heading into 2026, the world champion and the iconic brand will no longer be working together.
“It’s been 17 years of a partnership that changed my life,” Medina wrote on social media. “Rip Curl believed in me when everything was still just a dream — and together, we achieved three world titles, countless trips, lessons, and moments I’ll carry with me forever.”
Like many of his generation, a sponsorship from brands like Rip Curl or Quiksilver were what pro surfing hopefuls lusted after. Medina was no different. Rip Curl, which was founded in 1969, signed the checks for Mick Fanning, who is someone Medina looked up to. Still does, probably.
“When I was a kid, I dreamed of being sponsored by the same brand as Mick Fanning, my favorite surfer,” Medina continued. “Side by side with a team that always treated me like family, is something I’ll always hold with deep gratitude. I would’ve never gotten where I am on my own. Rip Curl was with me through every stage, every win, every challenge. I learned so much from all of you — in surfing and in life.”

The reason for the split isn’t clear at the time of this writing, but Medina has seen some big changes in his life in the last few years. He tore his pectoral muscle about a year ago and sat the year out. He also went through a divorce in 2022, to name a few, and his split with Rip Curl will likely be another big change. One can assume, however, that Medina has something else in the works — he’s a sought-after personality; a major score for any brand — and from the tone of his Instagram post, he holds no ill-will towards Rip Curl.
“Today, a beautiful chapter comes to an end,” he finished. “The legacy is built, the story is written. As you say in Australia: ‘good job, mate.’ And it truly was — a partnership that worked. Thank you for everything, Rip Curl. Always.”
Rip Curl also penned a little goodbye letter, but it’s markedly more measured. “Obrigado Gabriel Medina for an incredible 17 years together living #TheSearch,” the brand wrote. “Your contribution to not only surfing as a whole but our brand and community is unforgettable. We wish you all the best. #VaiMedina.”
