The Inertia

Local surfers on Australia’s Gold Coast are getting in their fill of waves before the world’s best surfers flood Coolangatta. Duranbah, just around the corner from the Championship Tour venue at Snapper Rocks, has been turning easterly swells into the type of playful, sand-bottom barrels that surfers dream of.

The YouTube account @surfonmars called it “tubes galore” on Monday, April 27. “Plenty of good size waves with a bit of push behind them,” they wrote.

As the WSL packs up from Margaret River and heads to Queensland — filling the lineup with tour surfers, staff, and their entourages — now’s the time to take advantage of the swell. The forecast is looking like there’s a lot more of these tubes on the way; and it’s looking promising for the Snapper CT to kick off on the first day of the swell window if the forecast holds.

Unlike Margaret River, which had a lot of lay days and ran until the last possible day, Snapper could be quick.
