A week or so ago, heavy surf hit Los Angeles — and El Porto took it head on. This wasn’t the biggest day L.A. has ever seen — but it was heavy. An open-ocean style swell hit El Porto head on, pushing massive amounts of water straight into the coastline.
Only a few surfers paddled out. Most stood on the sand and watched. I followed pro surfer Kei Kobayashi as he made the decision to paddle straight into it — no channel, no easy way to get beyond the breaking waves. Just walls of water, board ditches, and a long fight to reach the lineup.
Kei only caught six waves that session, but one of them defined the day. This edit isn’t about hype or highlights. It’s about what heavy surf feels like — the pressure, the commitment, and the respect it demands.
