Los Angeles can have good waves. Waves like Malibu. Zuma. Topanga. Hell, County Line can be good every once in a blue moon. But Los Angeles lineups are a few things: a bit overrated and as a result of that and the four-ish million people living there, a bit crowded. But when it does get good, it can get good. Hunter Jones, a surfer who grew up surfing El Porto and the like, knows this. And recently, L.A. got good.
“It was FIRING,” Jones said. “Los Angeles doesn’t get days like this often. The day before this swell, a massive storm rolled through Southern California: heavy rain, strong winds, flash flood warnings, and classic winter chaos. But as soon as it cleared, the ocean turned on in a way we dream about.”
The conditions were indeed dreamy, with offshores blowing and barrels running up and down the beach. Those equipped to wrangle the conditions were excited to say the least.
“Matt Pagan might’ve snagged the best barrel of the season (so far),” Jones continued. “I broke my magic board on a drainer. All in all, it was one of those sessions you wish you could bottle up forever, the kind that reminds you why you live here and why winter in California can be so special.”
