The Wedge, Newport Point, and Malibu: 40 Minutes of Hurricane Marie Chaos and Carnage

Hurricane Marie sent powerful surf to all parts of Southern California. This videographer witnessed all the glory, chaos, and carnage that came with it.

When Hurricane Marie sent a powerful swell toward Southern California, I knew I had to chase it. Over the course of several days, I filmed some of the biggest and most challenging surf I’ve seen in a long time — starting at a fickle Newport Beach point break that only comes alive a handful of times each year, then heading to the Wedge, and finally ending the swell at Malibu.

Some surfers found the wave of a lifetime. Others… well, let’s just say things didn’t exactly go according to plan. This edit has huge waves, heavy wipeouts, incredible rides, close calls, and plenty of moments that had me wondering whether I was standing in the right place. And when the waves are this big, simply getting back to the beach can be an accomplishment.
