From Indoek, the crew that brought you Surf Shacks Volumes One and Two, comes On Surfing, a collection of interviews and hand-drawn portraits of some of surfing’s most influential figures – both the most recognizable faces of surfing, and those toiling diligently behind the scenes. A collaboration between writer Michael Adno and artist Matt Titone, the book seeks to uncover what the sport/pursuit/religion of surfing means to those who have the greatest impact on it, including Gerry Lopez, Devon Howard, Kassia Meador, Stephanie Gilmore and The Inertia’s own Zach Weisberg.

All interviewees are asked the same questions about their lifelong relationship to surfing to uncover both the small details and the larger implications of the inexplicable and ever changing pursuit of surfing. Check out the preview of some of the interviews on the Indoek Website. A great addition to your bookshelf or gift list with the holidays just around the corner, you can pick up your copy here on Kickstarter.

“Lately, I’ve embarked on the challenge of mastering ‘big boards.’ Some call them ‘gliders,’ but big boards are a niche genre of very long boards first developed by Skip Frye in the early 1990s — usually 11 feet of board and over,” Says Devon Howard. “Big board surfing is all about a ‘feeling.’ It’s not about ‘ripping’ or any type of ‘performance’ surfing. The best way to describe this feeling is that you are tapping into a sensation that derives from ancient Hawaiian trim — a unique feeling of soaring above the ocean’s water line which Polynesians first tapped into roughly 1,000 years ago.”
