Israeli surfers couldn’t let a Mediterranean swell go un-surfed — even as sirens warned of incoming missiles. Over the weekend, two missiles struck near a surf lineup, and many surfers just kept on…surfing.
Surfers in Tel Aviv were enjoying a wind swell when incoming Iranian missiles started landing in the ocean. First, an explosion sent water hurling dozens of meters into the air. Then a second missile struck not far from an area where at least eleven people were surfing.
One surfer is seen jumping off his board, presumably taking cover from any shrapnel. But most of the surfers look oddly unfazed. Those who are outside continue waiting for waves, and those who are paddling back out continue doing so. (Watch the video of the missile strikes here.)
Minutes later, the lineup looks to be about the same size, and a surfer connected two nice backhand snaps, just down the beach from where the missile hit.
The Instagram page @wavehub_surf reported that no one was hurt by either of these ocean strikes.
Last week, missile debris fell in Tel Aviv’s surf park and perforated the pool basin.
It’s hard to tell if these surfers are numb to the missile strikes, or if they were just that desperate for waves. Maybe it’s a bit of both?
