Italo Ferreira Bit His Tongue About the Judging Following Narrow Loss at Trestles Pro

The Inertia

Italo Ferreira opted not to comment after a frustrating loss in the Trestles Pro. In Ferreira’s public group chat on Instagram titled “My World,” he told his fans that he’d keep his comments to himself.

“I wanted to write a lot of things here, but I prefer to remain silent,” said Ferreira.

“You have to have a lot of cold blood to put up with all of this,” he also wrote after losing to Joel Vaughn, a match-up in which 91 percent of WSL fans picked Ferreira.

Ferreira remained rather cryptic as to what exactly he was referring to, but the timing of his messages on Wednesday led one to believe that he was unhappy with how he was scored. Vaughn launched a straight air that awarded him an 8.3 in the final 90 seconds of their round of 16 heat, taking the lead and leaving Ferreira needing an 8.51. Ferreira’s answer, which he claimed confidently with double-handed fist pumps, only came in at 7.27. It wasn’t nearly enough to advance as Vaughn took the win with a final score of 16.87 to 16.20.

The last-minute heroics from Vaughn ultimately knocked Ferreira two notches down in the overall rankings, falling from 2nd to 4th.

Ferreira’s decision not to vent in his group chat contrasts with how he reacted to his loss in El Salvador this year. After losing to Jordy Smith in his El Salvador quarterfinal heat, Ferreira picked up his phone and wrote, “The WSL Brazil commentator f#cking drools over gringo balls. He wants to secure his job and stay neutral. He’s just talking sh%t.”

Ferreira was referencing comments that were made on the WSL’s Portuguese-language broadcast. He deleted the message soon thereafter.

True to his word, Ferreira never commented further on his scoring at Trestles. He simply congratulated Yago Dora on his win on Saturday and maintained his radio silence.
