Decorated Australian waterman and big-wave surfer Jamie Mitchell is in stable condition after suffering lacerations to his head and neck area after a surf accident at home in Hawaii.
“I had a bit of a rough morning but I am doing okay,” Mitchell said in an Instagram update.
Mitchell posted graphic photos of the injury that would make the faint of heart grow queasy. He said his 9’10’’ hit him in the face during a surf session, resulting in 18 staples in his head, 15 stitches in his throat, five stitches in his cheek, and five more elsewhere.
“It’s interesting that things go wrong when you least (expect it),” said Mitchell, who didn’t provide further details on the accident.
He thanked @tstraininghawaii and Juan Diego Evangelista for pulling him out of the water, as well as the staff at Kahuku Emergency for treating him.
“Sometimes life keeps giving you lemons, but you keep marching forward and believing you’re on the right path,” Mitchell wrote. “I’m more grateful than ever for my wife, family and friends. See you back in the water soon.”
The accident also happened to coincide with the launch of a new podcast, Living in Liquid, hosted by Mitchell. The podcast poked fun at the timing, calling it a PR stunt of “creative genius and masterful execution.”
