As Californians are currently getting their turn to ride what many are calling one of the most impressive south swells in years, Jamie O’Brien flew south to meet the pulse at a punishing Mexican beachbreak. We’re being careful to use definitive superlatives, but O’Brien went ahead and made the claim, calling it the “biggest south swell of the decade.”
O’Brien and friends towed into as many stand-up tubes as they wanted at what appears to be the beach that molded Championship Tour surfer Al Cleland. However, their tube-fest took a turn when one of the trucks used to launch Jet Skis was gobbled up by the ocean.
Despite hours of attempts to pull the truck out of the ocean, they couldn’t get enough traction on loose sand to yank the Toyota from the Pacific Ocean’s currents. O’Brien posted a crowdfunder to support the surf photographer/Jet Ski operation to whom the truck belonged.
“It’s hard to say epic session when something bad happens like that,” O’Brien said. “Super grateful to get great waves here, but I feel like now it’s time to get back.”
“Crazy day. We’re psyching still. We’re thankful no one got hurt.”
