The Inertia

Jamie O’Brien knows what a heavy wave is. He grew up drinking that famous Hawaiian juice, so it might be tough for him to get excited about waves that don’t offer up the kind of power that Hawaii can. But one wave does him just fine: the Wedge.

The Wedge, Newport’s weirdest and most famous wave, isn’t to be trifled with. It can be easy to think that, since every time it gets big the internet is flooded with clips of people getting pounded into the sand with little to no repercussions, but make no mistake: it’s a dangerous wave to surf.

It’s not expected that you’ll pull out of a Wedge tube. In fact, the place is a funny one because everyone’s looking simply for a barrel. Making it out isn’t the purpose, but it sure is a nice cherry on top. When California’s coastline was hit by a recent early south swell, most eyes were on the Wedge, and Jamie’s were too.
