The Inertia

A “Perfect 10” is a funny thing, isn’t it? Surfing is inherently subjective. Five judges have to assign a number value to commitment and degree of difficulty, innovative and progressive maneuvers, the combination of major maneuvers, variety of those maneuvers, and speed, power and flow. Aside from the variety bit, the rest of the judging criteria is pretty… vague. How does one properly judge something like “degree of difficulty” or “speed, power, and flow?” That said, however, when a perfect 10 drops, it’s generally pretty obvious that it was indeed a perfect 10. Like the one John John Florence pulled down in the finals of the Haleiwa Challenger, which he scored on his way to winning the event. Let’s have another look, shall we?
