Before the 2026 Championship Tour season began, Alejo Muniz had already determined that, no matter how the season went, it would be his last. But the 36-year-old Brazilian won’t stray far from surfing. Yesterday, he revealed that he’s going to start a career as an athlete manager with Outside Sports.
According to Brazilian surf news outlet AOS Midia, Muniz’s idea to work with athletes began at the Saquarema CT event this year while talking with Outside Sports’ founder Felipe Freitas. Muniz, who had spent the past seven years overseeing his own career without a manager, had an interest in business, contracts, and negotiations.
“I want to help athletes secure sponsorships and pursue their dreams,” Alejo told AOS.
Outside Sports currently represents Brazilian pro surfers Ian Gouveia and Luana Silva, among others.
Muniz will take advantage of his downtime, given he didn’t make the CT postseason, and attend a sports business course in São Paulo.
Even though Muniz has already committed to retiring this season, mathematically, he could still requalify for the 2027 season. He’s currently in 27th place in the overall ranking. The final event at Pipeline, which will include those who did not make the postseason, will be weighted 1.5 times other CT events. A good result could push him above the top-22 cutoff for requalification.
Muniz first qualified for the CT in 2011 when, as a rookie, he finished 10th overall. He made several semifinals, but never made a final on the CT. His career highlight came in 2013 when he beat Kolohe Andino in the final to win the U.S. Open. Muniz fell off tour in 2016, but nearly 10 years later, he revived his career and qualified for the 2025 tour. In 2025, he ranked 22nd, earning the final spot to requalify for 2026.
