The Inertia

John John Florence is a man who likes to explore. It’s part and parcel of being a surfer, hopefully. There’s the constant wondering about what’s around the next headland, the ever-present itch to go and… look. He’s spent his life doing it — mostly searching for waves — and in the process, he’s learned that exploring is a fantastic way to understand the world in general. It’s a way of getting out of the tiny bubbles we tend to inhabit. It’s a way of making yourself feel smaller, less important, and in the process, connecting with the bigger picture that we’re all part of. We tend to forget that too often. We’re a selfish species, but exploring can make us a little less so.

The John John team has been filming this exploration over the years. Trips upon trips upon trips, all with cameras rolling for the majority of the time. The short you see above, filmed and edited in a form that, if you’re a JJF fan, is familiar by now, was cut together from those trips. It’s a call to get out there and see it for yourself. Something we all should try and do more of.
