When it comes to surf contests, Fiji is a tough venue to beat. That’s saying a lot, because surf contests are often held in some pretty nice places. Places like Hawaii. Places like Tahiti. You get the idea — postcard places; places with swaying palms and clear water and vibrant reefs. But Fiji? Tough to beat, like I said. Jordy Smith agrees.
“It’s always so good to be able to go to Fiji, especially for the Final 5,” he wrote. “I was lucky enough to bring my whole family over to stay with me on Tavarua for the week leading up to the contest and managed to score some pretty fun waves at Cloudbreak before the event started.”
While he may not have ended up with the result he was hoping for, it’s relatively safe to say he came out on top, results be damned.
“Not the result I was hoping for and this was definitely a bit of an emotional rollercoaster, but I’m proud of how this year went and this was a fun end to the competitive season,” he said. “Can’t wait to chase waves all over the world during the extra long off season.”
