The Inertia

Kai Lenny has a soft spot in his heart for Uluwatu, as do most surfers. If you’ve been following along, you’re aware of the construction project currently underway on the Uluwatu cliffs.

It’s part of a seawall project that aims to protect the temple on the cliff. It is a site of great historical importance, but conservation groups are sounding the alarm about what environmental damages the project might cause.

“We are alarmed by the potential environmental risks this project poses to the surrounding marine and surf ecosystem,” reads a petition from Save the Waves. “Without such an assessment, it is impossible to gauge how Uluwatu’s biodiverse surf ecosystem might be affected.”

In the video you see here, Lenny, Alex Hayes, and Eric Geiselman go foil surfing beneath the cliff of Uluwatu before the landscape is changed significantly. They rode waves from the temple through Secrets to Uluwatu.

“[This is] one of my favorite places in the world to foil, so it’s hard to see the construction on top of the Uluwatu cliffs as it’s being broken down to create a barrier to preserve the temple,” Lenny wrote. “I understand the preservation, however these cliffs made of limestone are truly what makes this place so unique and what has created incredible surfing. Hopefully the work being done doesn’t change this place forever.”
