The Inertia

Kai Lenny isn’t known for his small-wave exploits. He’s known for a whole lot of things, from surfing the world’s biggest waves to pushing the frontiers of how we play in the ocean, but when Kai’s name gets brought up, it’s likely not because you saw him surfing a longboard at Waikiki.

But Kai Lenny is a surfer, and surfers will ride waves on whatever they can get their hands on. Kai, as you’d expect, is a fantastically talented longboarder. He’s got an uncanny knack for mastering pretty much any kind of wave-riding craft he decides to try out. Here, he surfs a longboard at Waikiki, steps onto a foil, and then heads over to China Walls to tempt fate on a mat. And he really, really tempts fate.

“Taking the surf mat out at China Walls,” he wrote, “dangerously close to the rocks, where one wrong line could mean a trip to the hospital. Watch till the end… this one gets way too close for comfort!”
