The Inertia

Crowded waves are every surfer’s nightmare. That being said, even in the most crowded of lineups, waves still go unridden. People fall and there are plenty of things that you can be doing to glide through, pick up the scraps. If you’re lucky, maybe you can even work your way to the top of the crowded lineup and score the wave of the day. While you could go about getting more waves by dropping in, snaking, and generally being a dick, there’s really no need for that. In fact, as the rest of the lineup turns on you, you’ll probably end up catching fewer waves than you would’ve otherwise.

Whether you’re a visual or an auditory learner, this video is sure to teach you a thing or two. Kale Brock breaks down the art of maneuvering in a lineup with both videos of himself surfing (pretty dang well) in a crowded lineup and a thorough explanation.

“Crowded surf spots are becoming more and more common in this stay-at-home work environment,” Brock wrote. “Surfers are less bound by the clock and less bound by location. In this video I chat through, using some clear examples, strategies you can apply to increase your wave count (without annoying anybody!) amongst a crowded lineup.”
